It is based on the first two novels in the Pirates! Series by Gideon Defoe. Set in , the story follows the adventures of a pirate captain called Pirate Captain Hugh Grant in his attempts to win the Pirate of the Year competition for the first time. Despite being mostly deluded and incompetent he is actually kind at heart and has the respect of his crew.
He is really up against it through when it comes to winning the competition because he is a pretty rubbish pirate and is up against the cream of the piratical world which includes Cutlass Liz Salma Hayek and Black Bellamy Jeremy Piven.
While attempting to rob a ship, Pirate Captain has a chance meeting with Charles Darwin David Tennant who notices that the ship's parrot, Polly is in fact the world's last Dodo. Darwin, the Captain and his crew travel to London to show the Scientific community their discovery but while there risk bumping into the staunchly anti-pirate, Queen Victoria Imelda Staunton.
As you'd expect from an Aardman production, the film is full of both subtle and not so subtle humour. One of the first things that made me laugh was the names of Pirate Captain's crew. They are great names which bought a smile to my face each time they were used. A lot of the humour comes from the book on which the film is based but it is liberally laced with Aardman's trademark subtlety. Every shop sign or wanted poster features a pun and there are nods to the likes of Blackadder.
It's the sort of film that will take several viewings in order to see all of the jokes. The animation is top notch, as it should be.
Aardman are the masters of their art and having dabbled in stop-motion animation myself, I understand the time and effort that must go into making a stop-motion feature. Aardman has come a long way from the rough and ready clay models of The Wrong Trousers but the models still maintain their distinctive style and it is obvious that care has been taken during each of the millions of frames. The voice cast is excellent.
Most of the actors are instantly recognisable but David Tennant puts on a convincing accent for his interpretation of Charles Darwin. The actors help to make the scrip very funny and I'm pleased to see that the filmmakers have stuck with a mostly British cast and stayed away from an A-List star. The soundtrack is enjoyable and uses songs which are not only great but fit the story perfectly. While my girlfriend, most of the adult audience and myself enjoyed the film, the young children in the audience seemed a little bored by it.
I don't think there was enough in the film to keep the young children entertained and a lot of the humour was going over their head. It is almost like the film has been pitched at an adult audience, which is fine and worked, but with a U rating and an Easter release, lots of children will go and may be disappointed. It was such a funny, wonderful film. The animation was beautiful and the voices Watching this took me back to the good old days of being younger. The animation was beautiful and the voices were perfect.
Just a great film all around. The Pirates is a film that won't disappoint, theres fun for everyone. Aardman gets back to it's house recipe: stopmotion. Now showing the relentless efforts of a bunch of varmints and his captain for being recognized "the pirate of the year". Humor a-la Monty Phyton, cultural references and historical characters makes it works as a short feature of Aarr!
DanielOnFilm Apr 28, The 3D is worthwhile; you get your money's worth for the glasses. The stop motion animation is overall very smooth, and the film is chock full of sight gags and verbal humor. What makes The Pirates on par with Pixar films is that it's just as much fun for adults as it is for kids.
The The 3D is worthwhile; you get your money's worth for the glasses. The humor is often sly, and may sail over the heads of children, but there's also cartoony sight gags the kids will enjoy. This surprised me in a big way I was not expecting much here but what I got was a smart, funny, and all around good time.
MagnificentM May 29, The film was charming, but it lacked the right amount of humor. The crew also deserts him when they find out that he lied about Polly's fate.
The Captain returns alone to London to sell baby clothes, but soon becomes determined to free Polly. He re-encounters a now-devastated Darwin, who has learned that the Queen is part of a secret dining society with several other world leaders who are now aboard her steamship, the QV1 , waiting to eat the most rarest and most endangered animals.
The Pirate Captain enlists Darwin's help to steal an airship presented at the science contest and rescue Polly. Aboard the QV1 , the Pirate Captain and Darwin disrupt the meal, and are soon joined by the rest of the Captain's crew, who have been informed by Mr.
Bobo of his need. The Queen locates them and attempts to kill both of them, but together they best her. In the battle, they accidentally mix the ship's store of baking soda with vinegar, causing a violent reaction that rends the ship in two. The Pirate Captain rescues Polly and they escape safely, leaving behind a furious Queen.
With his reputation among pirates restored because of the large bounty now on his head, the Pirate Captain and his crew continue to explore the high seas in search of adventure. In a few post-credits scenes, they leave Darwin on the Galapagos Islands, Mr. Bobo joins the Pirate Captain's crew, the Queen is left at the mercy of some of the rare animals she had planned on eating, Black Bellamy is forcefully stripped of his trophy by the Pirate King because of the Pirate Captain's new infamy, and the crew present the Pirate Captain with their own homemade Pirate of the Year trophy.
However, I've talked to several people who assumed that's what this movie was about. I've only seen the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but having seen the Ask a Ninja review of 3 and consequently 2 I feel I can say without fear of contradiction that this is a better movie than any of those. About an hour into the movie, after the big awards ceremony you'll know what I mean , there's a bit of a lull in the action.
That's probably the best time to pop out. The 3D is excellent and really brings the models alive. This kind of claymation stop-animation is tailor-made for 3D effects, giving the figures more solidity. I saw the movie in a theater using passive 3D technology, which is my preference. Active 3D doesn't provide any discernibly better quality, but can all too easily go out of sync, ruining the 3D effects.
