When H. Lovecraft wrote his short story, The Call of Cthulhu , he shocked readers with Cthulhu, a monstrous being that rose from the ocean and re-formed after a boat crashed into it. Cthulhu also plays a memorable role in the new HBO series Lovecraft Country , based on the novel of the same name. The story centers on a young African-American man traveling across the segregated American south in the s looking for his missing father, only to encounter monsters and mayhem straight out of Lovecraft's prose.
This is where Call of Cthulhu comes in. It can even use its black alien blood to suffocate people! He is said to resemble a small ball of fire when he is summoned to earth, and is worshipped as a god by the reptilian creatures of another planet.
He is the god of perversions and sinister impulses. He often appears as a fat man with neither head nor neck, and mouths in the palms of his hands. Glaaki is said to resemble a large slug with long metallic spines. Glaaki also has eyes at the end of long tentacles, which function sort of telescopes on a submarine.
According to legend, Glaaki first traveled to earth inside a meteor. Not me. Mordiggian is a sort of vacuumus, amorphous entity who sucks in all of the heat and energy surrounding him, thus drastically lowering the temperature of wherever he is at a given time. He is worshiped by ghouls. Mordiggian attacks his victims by swallowing their energy, and physically dissolving their bodies — sort of like a cross between Kirby and a komodo dragon.
Yig Father of Serpents appears as either a snake-man hybrid, or a serpent with bat-like wings, or as a giant snake. It is unknown how large the throng of those who worship the dreaded Cthulhu is, but his cult has many cells around the globe. The cult is noted for chanting its horrid phrase or ritual: " Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn ," which translates as "In his house at R'lyeh dead C'thulhu waits dreaming. When the creature finally appears, the story says that the "thing cannot be described," but it is called "the green, sticky spawn of the stars", with "flabby claws" and an "awful squid-head with writhing feelers.

Cthulhu is depicted as having a worldwide cult centred in Arabia, with followers in regions as far-flung as Greenland and Louisiana. There are leaders of the cult "in the mountains of China" who are said to be immortal. Cthulhu is described by some of these cultists as the "great priest" of "the Great Old Ones who lived ages before there were any men, and who came to the young world out of the sky.
Cthulhu is also worshiped by the nonhuman creatures known as Deep Ones. Cthulhu is mentioned in other sources, sometimes described in ways that appear to contradict information given the most well-known accounts. Human explorers in Antarctica discovered an ancient city, for example, where the Old Ones are described as a species of extraterrestrials, also known as Elder Things , who were at war with Cthulhu and his relatives or allies.
The discoverers of the Elder Things were able to puzzle out a history from sculptural records:.
