As for equipment, they already deal with that for a wookiee smuggler companion wears gear. It's just not visible, which anybody that really wants to play a wookiee would understand comes with being a wookiee, especially if the converse is not having a wookiee. As for the the story, I don't see how it would matter. On Imp side, just use the same dialogue as if you're playing any slave race. It's already there. It's not like the characters would scream "OMG!
I can't foresee a single dialogue change that would be necessary. They'd just have to remove romance with companions, which already is done on a gender basis. As far as dialogue, the idea of playing a Rodian with subtitles just like in the movies would be great fun for me. They already have enough Rodian dialogue to use. It's not something I'd tire of any more than regular dialogue. For those that would hate that as dialogue obviously wouldn't want to pick a rodian anyway.
This is one of the rare occasions that I disagree with the dev decision. Mostly, I think they make good choices with this game. It's not a big issue for me I'm happy with my humans , but I would love it if my smuggler were a rodian. I suspect - even with current dev statements to the contrary - that this is something we'll see in the future. Sadly this game is all about story, a story that wont let you make your own char There is a game in this story somewhere? I should resub and try to find it, I missed it my first go around.
No one reacted baddly to jar jar, or anyone in the bar in mos esley. I dont see why that wouldb e an issue in this game. The only negative I saw towards anyone in the movies were that droids dont belong in the cantina. Yet there were all sorts of wierd races there and no one cared. The Mon Calamari general guy was wierd in the movies. No one should care here either. Wait a minute! Thats what they say, i wouldnt know as my bounty hunters spends his days walking disillusioned around, trying to figure out how the heck he can get out of this stupid mando clan he has gotten himself into.
That is whay has been puzzling me as well, the only time i have heard that aliens should be some kind of weird thing, that peoeple act funny around is in TOR. Simple answer. Time and money. Plus, new races are the perfect things to add in expansions. So why can't we play Wookiees and other races? Because we haven't had an expansion yet. Thats my issues with this crap as well. To be honest I wanted to be a jawa, but apperently they have not been discovered yet.
Im over it now hoever, at the time I wasnt even considering this game at all. Im here and love it but I have faith that BW will change there mind and allow me to be my Jawa. All the races' male and female respective bodies are the exact same except for the head.
I think they just didn't wanna reform gear. Lord Praven is an example of Sith on the republic side. Wookiees cannot be force-sensitive. In the Legacy system, any character can become force-sensitive. Ergo, wookiees can never be playable. Light side choice: uwaaaaggggggh!
Dark side choice: ewarrrrggggggh! The original reason given for not adding Wookie, Rodians, Trandosians, etc. All NPCs treat all non-Human characters the same, as some alien species. They never refer to anything specific about their species at all.
In such a case Wookies would work just fine. It is the Romantic stories where it becomes a problem because it would simply look freaky to show them kissing and in some cases like Rodians and Trandosians it would result in horrible clipping that would look even more freakish.
There is an easy way to get around this though. Assume players that want to play those species don't want a Romantic story most of them could really care less and simply block those Flirt options the same way they do for same gender characters.
Then players could play any species with the proviso that they would simply be giving up any Romantic options. That's how I think it should be done anyway.
Just so I can have a cutscene where a wookie gives a wink, the screen fades out, then it fades back in and he's in bed having a cigarette with smooth jazz playing in the background. I'll would rather give up on this whole personal story and focus on the voice overs to be able to play a whole slew of Aliens.
No offense but I'm not even interested in their story. I want to play my story. This was made after Lowie or Qui-Gon's Master were created. Past the no force-using wookie rule, we get into game and atmosphere breaking territory and Can you see the romantic scene implied?
We're going to get Nautolans and Zeltron's and other alien-esq human races soon enough. Rodians can speak Basic as easily as humans. If they wanted they could simply let your companion translate for you. You can have some wookie growling in the beginning and than the original voiceover could be played.
If your first companion is a woman you hear the female voice over if your first companion is a male you hear the If your first companion is a droid The guys who say that there is a problem with amour haven't played a bounty hunter yet, or a sith. Companions like jawa won't display any change of gear they still have the slots thou.
The headgear issues is funny.. I don't understand why they have to display the head parts outside of the helmet. When body parts like hair collide with the helmet or headgear model, they simply should set the head to human bold with this gear. So there is no excuse for not bringing in rodians wookies nautolans and whatsoever.
This would be really disappointing, cause there is no logical explanation lore why those species aren't available from the first day. I'm sure we'll get the "People of the Trees" when their home planet Kashyyyk becomes available. Wookie, Jawa, Yoda, Ewok.
Any species without the body of a human; 1- takes too much work in order to fit the armor. Well for me, I'd accept the wookie, only growling, and not showing armor and not romancing with anyone. And I don't understand the people saying no. If you dont like the idea, then don't roll one. Not like it's going to ruin the lore or something.
In the end, all this marvellous voice acting is just making things extremely hard. Everything bit different seems like an hell to implement. Putting aside the irritation factor this would generate, you do realise this would require rerecording every conversation in the game for every companion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is only one option that wouldn't be massively expensive - subtitles. I agree with you. I bet that if they make a poll like "Ok, we can put wookies but with only subtitles,no voice acting, it'ok for you?
So basicly. You're saying because of the voice acting they did for practically every quest and thing in the game. It's THE reason that they ain't adding new races? If they add new races. All they need to do is insert text the whole time. Yoda's species is a special case where it has nothing to do with problems of implementation and everything to do with GL keeping them unavailable. Ewoks should be probably unknown to anyone not on Endor at this time. The only classes I could, logically, see a Wookiee filling are Smuggler and Bounty Hunter, and Jawa maybe a consular, smuggler or a sorcerer.
There's a quest to capture a Force using Jawa on Tatooine, if anyone was curious why I mentioned two Force using classes. It's no different to the current non-english basic conversations already in game. Wookie Power! Yeah because playing a wookie story line would be so neat. That same reasoning probably means we won't be getting any more voiced quests. Just what we need Aye reading is very hard for some.
It's not the reason IMO, there's basic speaking non-humanoids or much less human than the current 1 fit all human body-types they could have had but didn't. It makes me wonder if SWTOR will ever get ANY new races and if they do whether they'll be anything but different coloured humans with horns instead of hair.
Noone says you would be forced to roll one IF they implemented wookies. Why so serious? The text tends to fly by, is in a small font and can be problematic at times depending on where you are.
I'm often finished reading the text before the 3 word is spoken out loud. YMMV I guess. In SWG case the grass actually is greener, has more races, and full space flight too. Give it some time, you'll have a beautiful lawn yet. You just might not have Wookiees. That grass had a lot more time to grow then this batch, and is much more lush in some patches the previous batch wasn't.
Or decent space combat. The official quote was something along the lines of "What makes a wookie so cool is the mystery behind them: if you can play them that goes away! The Wookiees spoke an array of dialects collectively known as Wookiee language, all of which consisted in a combination of barks, roars, moans and growls. Zaalbar once told Mission Vao that the whole point was to make it difficult for outsiders to understand.
Adult Wookiees are tall, in excess of two meters in height, and are covered with a uniform, mid-length coat of thick hair in various shades of brown. Although albino Wookiees are rare, they are not unheard of. However, such a birth is generally held to be a bad omen, as white hair does not blend in with the earth-tones of their forest surroundings.
They also have retractable claws ideal for climbing trees. As their name implies, Wookiees live in tree-houses in their forested planet.
Their community is led by a chieftain. Wookie society is generally peaceful, and the Holder of Laws oversees Wookiee trials and judges offenses. Murder is not permitted and is punishable by death.
Although their culture may seem primitive, they are surprisingly capable warriors. They're strong enough to rip off the limbs of their foes with their bare hands, and can pick up combat techniques pretty quickly. This legendary strength has made them prized quarry for slavers and hunters looking to use that strength for manual labor, entertainment in gladiatorial combat, or just to test their mettle against the Wookiees' combat prowess.
They just choose not too for whatever reason. Also many of them like hutts, twil'lek people from the outer rim speak huttenese which is really really common since the hutts trade so much.
Most people know it or should. Wookiese can only speak their own. Wookies also have a problem raging and being enslaved. This massively limits what they do due to stereotype. There's only one jedi in the known EU that a wookie. Because people like me were playing it until the NGE came out, which is when it really began to die. I did actually. It never felt like Star Wars. It never caught the feel of the movies for me. It didn't get anything right about Star Wars. It may have been adequate for RP'ers to do what they wanted but that isn't Star Wars.
Its about being part of an adventure to unbelievable places, not sitting around in a cavern grinding my dance skill. It was dying long before then. It was bleeding subs like crazy and LA made them try to save it. The developers are at fault for failing to sit at the meeting and finding out what made Star Wars so great. Lucas Arts may have pushed them but it was ultimately SOE who failed.
Eight and a half years for a MMO isn't so amazing. It was dead long before the shutdown too. The other way for me. I had fun in SWG back then, for what it was, and it had some fun features. But it didn't capture that Star Wars-feel one bit. It was really lousy in that department. As for playable Wookiees, that won't happen, I can almost garantuee it.
Atleast not for a long time. The lead characters in the movies were human, and Bioware is sticking closely to that. What has that to do with the gameplay issue mentioned though? You may as well say that Wookies could have their own person translator droid box. He was on about cut scenes, and there's plenty of non-english going on in those already.
So Wookies wouldn't be Jedi. Chiss can't be Sith or Jedi yet they are a playable race. Why are there no playable ones that don't fit the basic selection human body types then if it wasn't a design choice?
Your loss then. Nor how Wookies would somehow detract from that. Wookies would detract from it because wookies aren't common. It will kill the lore. You can't have wookies in fleet, you can barely get away with freaking 5. They just aren't common. We only see one wookie until we get to the freaking prequels. I'm kicking people's asses, force choking them, I'm being a goddamn Sith Lord. I am on my way to enter tombs, find the secrets of the force and I'm there to take them at the expense of anyone who gets in the way.
As a Jedi Knight my first kill is a guy with a lightsaber. My eventual goal becomes to kill the goddamn Emperor of the Sith Empire. So you know what I do? That is what star wars is about. A freaking adventure to do the impossible.
The lore reasons are just excuses. They regularly game the lore to make the game more playable - lightsabers not slicing through everything being one example. The real reason is Wookies are too different to other humanoids.
Normal armour and clothing doesn't fit them, they can't speak basic, and the idea of getting jiggy with a walking carpet is probably another reason. The observation that all the playable races in game are the same bodies with different heads is entirely legitimate.
There's a site which did a comparison of the bodies with obscured heads - you can't tell the difference. I don't agree with that, but it's BioWare's ethos obviously.
I'm kicking people's asses, force choking them, I'm being a gosh darn Sith Lord. My eventual goal becomes to kill the gosh darn Emperor of the Sith Empire. And Sith Lords are common? Except I don't see another person who did the same thing I did when I did my class quest. I see someone. By that logic that guy who played Mass Effect before me killed the entire point of beating Saren.
That's not true. The point of doing that was the adventure. To go on an epic quest. I don't give a damn if someone else did it already! You don't see millions of Sith Lords?
Then surely you could just ignore a few Wookies too? But still you're NOT the only one to be doing these things in SWTOR, everyone is, which I guess is why you didn't like SWG, it was an MMO and couldn't really be played as a single player game or online instanced special snowflake simulator as it's known in the bussiness. Which is fair enough, it's your choice not to like MMOs, but it's no reason to discriminate against Wookies! I believe Lucas officially banned any more wookie Jedi. Or was that Hutt?
I think he banned Wookie Jedi. Found it. I see about maybe in fleet, there are billions of people in the Empire. Now tell me when was the last time you saw a Wookie ingame Not as a smuggler.
I don't see millions of Sith Lords. There's one standing in the fleet. I do wonder what you'll do if they introduce Wookies as an expansion or legacy race though. Name one currently playable species that has no history speaking basic. But this isn't SWG now, is it? When your story is actually professionally written, I'd rather have it fit. SWG, sure, you could role play a real wookiee just fine since the content was what the community made it. Here, we have professionally written scripts, an none of them fit wookiees.
I might be able to imagine the fat wookiee and the tall muscular wookiee, but the body type 2 would be a little off and body type 1 would just fail hard from a lore perspective. I suspect there would have to be a huge out cry for wookies for them or any species who can't speak basic to come into the game.
Its simply that Bioware put such a huge amount of time and money into the story and the fully voiced MMO that they wont want people to not play the story. Kinda wonder if at level 50 legacy they might allow it as you will have done the stories so many times by then most people would be skipping them any way. BioWare was worried that popular and iconic races like the Wookiee and the Mon Calamari, who would not be available to the Empire-for obvious reasons- would make the Republic too attractive and interesting of an option than the 'pro-human' Empire.
Accentuating the diversity of the Republic may have made the Republic side more popular, and BioWare just couldn't have allowed that. Yeah, for that one guy who's going to stick with playing this game for all that time.
Again give the NPCs in game that don't speak Basic or English in fact :p subtitles and wookie sounds or even a robot translator isn't the end of the world. And professionals can't write a story for a Wookie? The aren't going to be a carbon ite copy of the human ones Because they are inherently fast runners and no one stands a chance against a Wookiee in a race.
For all the people talking about a wookie howling grunting issue, he could just have a translator droid follow him around everywhere.
Wookie race is in the game. You can see them all over in the game, and even have one as a companion as a smuggler. In all fairness this game is based around EU, the old republic setting isn't cannon, though many parts of the game had to be approved by Lucas before it hit the market.
There is 0 reason why they couldn't have simply made a Wookie class. They have them as companions. The model is essentially human with elongated features covered with hair. Jeez, my belf and tauren in wow wear some of the same tier pieces. They just expand or shrink as needed. It's a model Language argument is null and void.
Translators - problem fixed. Romance - Aweomse- One you go furry, you won't leave in a hurry
